Viriditas at BioPhilia Gallery by ArtPrize (Grand Rapids, MI) Fall, 2025
Picture

Viriditas is a Latin word that translates to “greenness,” but can encompass ideas of lushness, fecundity, growth or healing. Layering figurative silhouettes with imagery of native and medicinal plants and elements from the built environment, "Viriditas" examines the relationship between our well-being and that of the natural world. Inspired by family narratives and plant lore, my practice explores the interconnections between nature, memory, trauma and identity, and seeks to understand relationships of power and powerlessness, degradation and reclamation. Finding parallels between human and environmental trauma, specifically those caused by patriarchal systems of domination, my work seeks to “re-wild” or reclaim what has been lost or desecrated, a symbolic return of inner and outer landscapes to a place of healing, connection and well-being.
